What is Chrysalis?

Chrysalis is the growth stage between caterpillars and butterflies. This symbolises that through dying to self, Christ can transform us into new beings. Jesus Christ can transform us into something beautiful. We must open ourselves to Jesus Christ for this transformation to occur.

Chrysalis is the name chosen for the experience that allows young adults and youth to experience the essential growth into a mature faith.

Chrysalis has its roots deeply planted in the “Walk to Emmaus”, that provides participants with an opportunity to learn more about faith; to experience Christian love and support; and a chance to make new commitments in their faith journey. The content of the weekend focuses on God’s Grace, how one experiences Christ as a friend in the body of Christ, and how one is called into discipleship, giving love to a needful world.

What happens at Chrysalis?

You will spend a weekend with peers in worship, prayer, fellowship, recreation, singing and discussion. You will experience the love of Christ through the prayers and act of service of a loving support community. You will hear talks given by lay and clergy. The talks focus on the needs of maturing young adults and youth that offer the message of the Gospel and the friendship and example of Jesus Christ. Fifteen talks are given over the period of the journey or flight, followed by a discussion and reflection on how these messages can be helpful to your personal faith. You will explore how this friendship with Jesus can help you live your faith with family, friends and community.

What happens after Chrysalis?

One of the primary strengths of Chrysalis is the follow-up. Your journey/flight lasts a weekend, but you are invited to build on it for the rest of your life through:

  • Expanding your spiritual life through study, prayer and church participation
  • Becoming more active as a disciple of Christ in the world through your home church

To nurture this discipleship, Chrysalis offers specific opportunities:

  • A “reunion group” that meets weekly to maintain spiritual accountability
  • Monthly Community gatherings for fellowship and worship
  • Opportunities and training to support and participate in leading future Chrysalis Flights.

Who should go to Chrysalis?

Chrysalis Journeys are for Young Adults who are post Matric (Grade 12) up till 28 years of age (+28 on discretion). Chrysalis Flights are for teenagers between 15 and 18 years and are still in school. Chrysalis is for growing Christians who are open to experience the grace and love of God in new ways through the Christian community. Most importantly, it is for those potential leaders who will be committed to make a difference in their Church and community as a result of this experience.
